Introduction by Bishonen[edit]

I created this article today as a spin-off from Shakespeare's reputation, which is getting long. Please add to it, especially at both ends! It's fairly fat around the middle, but at this moment it only goes from 1668 to 1841. Tolstoy on Shakespeare[edit]

When the article is brought up to date with more recent historical periods, Tolstoy's opinion should be mentioned. See Tolstoy as cited, e.g., by George Orwell in his essay, found at http://whitewolf.newcastle.edu.au/words/authors/O/OrwellGeorge/essay/leartolstoyfool.html :

... [Tolstoy] saying that throughout life Shakespeare has aroused in him ‘an irresistible repulsion and tedium’.

Tolstoy had (much) more to say about Shakespeare. But that is a good starting point.

To List, or To Prose?[edit]

Should this article really be a simple list of quotations? Wouldn't it be better to turn it into a "real" article discussing critical commentary over the years? There certainly should be enough material out there for this, and then we'd avoid requests for deletion or suggestions to move it to WikiQuotes. --Xover (talk) 06:20, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'd say go ahead. Don't make them too lengthy, though, or we run into copyright problems. Short attributed quotations are fine. There seems to be a school of thought that the style of this article (all quotations) isn't appropriate for an encyclopedia. However I wouldn't worry about that too much either: if that argument does prevail the chances are the contents of this page would be "transwiki'd". AndyJones (talk) 11:48, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No, the problem is that it's a collection of mostly positive quotes, without commentary or context. Pope, for instance, didn't just praise Shakespeare--he also rewrote many of Shakespeare's lines, because he didn't like them. Drmies (talk) 18:53, 30 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
