Thanks, I'll go read the rule, but what I don't understand is this: If the third stike is not caught and first base is open, the batter is not simply awarded first base, he always has to run there. Is this not true?

OK, nevermind, I see my problem. I misunderstood the claus leading up to the list as meaning "being on base" rather than "becoming a baserunner". So I understand now why my edit was incorrect. Thanks! Synaptidude 6 July 2005 19:07 (UTC)

Tagging up, leave when touched or caught?[edit]

I've changed the wording to "legally caught" because this is what the MLB rule 7.08(d) says:

Any runner is out when (d) He fails to retouch his base after a fair or foul ball is legally caught before he, or his base, is tagged by a fielder.

As I understand it, a bobbled ball is not legally caught until the fielder has secure posession of it. Thus a baserunner has to wait, and can't break on first touch. If I am misunderstanding the rule, please feel free to explain how. (The rules are available at mlb.com, BTW.) -- Coneslayer 15:58, 2005 July 11 (UTC)

The rules state that the runner can leave the base as soon as the fielder has touched the ball. Were this not so, any outfielder could prevent a sacrifice fly by juggling the ball continually while running towards the infield and only securing it when safely in front of the runner. "Rule 2.00 (Catch) Comment: A catch is legal if the ball is finally held by any fielder, even though juggled, or held by another fielder before it touches the ground. Runners may leave their bases the instant the first fielder touches the ball. ... "
