Wolf DNA[edit]

Shiba Inu is the dog breed that is genetically closest to the wolves.

Really? www.shibamac.com says so, eh? William Harris • (talk) • 01:07, 3 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Unlikely, probably some huskies, as they often interbred with wolves and their offspring may have come back to society as they tended to be social towards people — Preceding unsigned comment added by TTTime05 (talkcontribs) 19:27, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

https://science.sciencemag.org/content/304/5674/1160.full Here's the journal article the nat geo article they're sourcing is sourcing. I believe they're correct in saying the Shiba is most closely related, as I've seen this stat in other places before, but without adequate biology background I can't determine which dog is "closest" to wolves as they present a number of metrics with different results. In any case, the Shiba seems to be within the top 3 closest dogs on all of them, and is the most-closely-related on one.Pencatpigpus (talk) 17:14, 11 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I wonder who will add this to the article. Morganfitzp (talk) 20:53, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The photo for the sesame looks like a creeping red[edit]

the photo labeled sesame looks a lot like a Saddleback aka creeping red which are color mutations of black and tan dogs. I'm not an expert but maybe someone who knows more can confirm if that's the best image for a sesame inu. 45.36.163.222 (talk) 05:00, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Should the translation for "Shiba Inu" ("Small Dog) be added?[edit]

Mainly wondering this, but should "small dog" be added to the names list in the infobox? Mainly wondering because most Japanese related articles usually have a translation for phrases like this. Rqkaiju2 (talk) 18:04, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

wikt:柴 the character of the name of the dog means faggot or brushwood. The etymology is unknown according to wiktionary but it likely derives from the dog's ability to enter small woods/bushes to flush out prey. The small theory is mentioned on Japanese Wikipedia but it's unsourced and I don't even see evidence that 柴 meant small historically beyond that it means a type of small tree/bush.
Regardless Wikipedia needs claims to be sourced, no matter how plausible the theory is behind the name you need a reliable source mentioning it to add it. Traumnovelle (talk) 22:03, 26 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
