how did pilgrims rest come into being a township?

Formation of Pilgrim's Rest, the town.[edit]

Man named Alex Patterson discovered first alluvial gold in 1873. in 1875 Pilgrim's Rest was declared a public gold digging area. The Transvaal Gold Mining Estates Ltd. mining company showed great interest in the area, and purchased mining rights through David Benjamin (year unknown). By 1940 mining had basically ceased, and the last gold mine was closed in 1971. The entire town was purchased by the provincial government in 1974, and proclaimed a National Monument in 1986. July 5th 2012. The department of public works, roads and transport in Mpumalanga has ordered the closure of 17 businesses in the small town of Pilgrims Rest, a historic gold mining town dating as far back as the 1800s, which was declared a national monument in 1986. Tourism is the main source of income for the community.
