I think it would be great to explain the origin of this term (or say that the origin is unknown). Also, if possible, to explain why the spelling and pronunciation don't go together. Most English words with strange spellings have been around long enough for pronunciations to change (or are "etymological respellings"—don't get me started), but "kayfabe" must be recent. —JerryFriedman 22:48, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

This is confusing.[edit]

I (and probably lots of other people who know very little about pro wrestling) would appreciate it if someone would take a look at the opening two paragraphs (particularly the second paragraph) and rewrite them using less wrestling slang. It's currently very confusing if you don't know the lingo. -Aranel ("Sarah") 02:03, 17 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Made a bunch of adjustments to try and enlighten the ignorant masses :P. Thoughts, anyone? --Pathogen 06:40, 9 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Why the "(professional wrestling)" tag?[edit]

I'm not sure why the "(professional wrestling)" in the title is necessary, since, as far as I know, kayfabe is exclusively a professional wrestling term. Heck, "kayfabe" redirects to "kayfabe (professional wrestling)". Shouldn't this page just be at "kayfabe" instead? --HBK 19:23, May 30, 2005 (UTC)

  • It's a carnival term, not just a wrestling term. McPhail 17:41, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Pig Latin origin?[edit]

I don't follow this speculation in the article: The term "kayfabe" itself may ultimately originate from the pig latin form of "fake." The pig latin would be "Akefay", which doesn't seem terribly similar to "Kayfabe". Unless this theory is widespread (citable) or there's something to this theory that isn't obvious, I think deleting the speculation is the right thing to do. --Ds13 07:20, 2005 Jun 5 (UTC)

From what I always understood, it's a scrambled version of "be fake". --HBK 05:36, Jun 6, 2005 (UTC)
Interesting. Know of a source we can cite to avoid future questions? Movie? Book? Anything. --Ds13 22:27, 2005 Jun 6 (UTC)
Unfortunately no; that's the major reason I haven't added that to the page yet. I likely read it on some forum somewhere. --HBK 03:50, Jun 7, 2005 (UTC)
