- 1899 – The New York Central railroad leases the Boston and Albany Railroad.
- 1919 – The "golden spike" is driven (pictured) and construction of the San Diego and Arizona Railway is completed at a cost of $18 million.[1][2]
- 1982 – The Jōetsu Shinkansen opens for service between Tokyo and Niigata.
- 2001 – Two Canadian National Railway trains collide head-on in Andersonville, Michigan (northwest of Detroit).
