Why is Colchester castle described as a royal castle? Rich Farmbrough 18:12, 6 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Its royal as in royal approval was given but thats true for all castles. So thats wrong. TAS 08:50, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Origins[edit]

Didn't colchester date back to roman times? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 213.208.107.68 (talk) 06:47, 14 May 2007 (UTC).[reply]

who built the COlchester castle? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.229.190.66 (talk) 19:42, 25 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Have a look at this for most answers. Colchester was an important Roman town and has continued until today. The castle is built on the site of a Roman temple, using salvaged Roman materials. It was built soon after the Conquest by the king's steward and reverted to royal possession in 1120. Depends how "royal castle" is defined - this one was not built directly for the king, but became a royal possession. As a matter of courtesy, always sign your posts. Largest keep[edit]

The Castle's own website has: "the largest keep ever built by the Normans" <http://www.colchestermuseums.org.uk/castle/castle_index.html>. It goes on: "The huge size of the temple meant that the keep of Colchester Castle was the largest ever built in Britain and is the largest surviving example in Europe." <http://www.colchestermuseums.org.uk/castle/castle_history.html>. That's good enough for me. But the article refers to a book by Friar, which I don't have access to. Could someone please look at it? The massive thickness of the keep walls could also be worth a mention. --Wikiain (talk) 00:21, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It was me who added that. Friar said England, but I don't think he contradicts either of the claims above so feel free to add those sources to the article and make the necessary changes to the phrasing. Nev1 (talk) 00:33, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Done, and a bit more. --Wikiain (talk) 01:55, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ownership[edit]

The "story so far" suggests that the Castle remained in the Gray/Round family until it was given to the town in 1922. But it was given by Weetman Pearson, 1st Viscount Cowdray, an industrialist who had been MP for the town and was then its High Steward: this is recorded on a plaque on the Castle (I have a photo). Ownership might or might not be compatible with continuation of a trust. --Wikiain (talk) 02:10, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

My understanding (I wrote the Ownership section) was indeed that it was held in trust right into the 20th century, as I recall with philanthropy in mind. According to the BBC, Cowdray simply donated the money needed for the town to buy it from the Round family and have it opened as a museum [1], which isn't implausible as a simplification. Other sources suggest, however, that he basically bought it himself in order to donate it, then immediately donated it, which sounds the most likely suggestion [2] [3]. I'll be in Colchester today and I can check for you. - Jarry1250 [Who? Discuss.] 08:42, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I look forward. In the meantime, I've put my photo of the plaque and some other relatively high-res (10 megapix) photos of the Castle, all taken in 2009, into Wikimedia Commons. The photo of the memorial to Lucas and Lisle has been put into their articles, as well as that on the siege - because, unlike other available photos of it, the inscription is readable on enlargement. --Wikiain (talk) 05:35, 23 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent. A book on the Round family notes it was in the possession of the Round family until 1917 (or just after), when Cowdray offered to buy it. This seems to confirm the idea that the bought it and then donated it. - Jarry1250 [Who? Discuss.] 16:53, 23 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Most excellent. Please amend as you think fit. --Wikiain (talk) 17:39, 23 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Phillips too. Keith-264 (talk) 11:36, 17 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Took a punt on correcting the references, checked for dupe wikilinks, dupe ref parameters, auto ed, cite check and split a few overlong paragraphs. All suggestive, rv as desired. Keith-264 (talk) 13:00, 17 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
