I don't like this -- is this all right with GFDL, if it does not cover third-party use? Certainly Wikipedians in the United Kingdom can get some photographs themselves and licence them under GFDL? -- Kaihsu 20:00, 2004 Feb 24 (UTC)

The images are all fairly simple fair use - all publicity pictures used as intended. So, unlikely to be problematic in the event that the license is of no value. These are an example of images where the uploader and wikipedia are protected legally by having a license but others can use fair use if they don't want to ask for their own permission. It's not unusual to find this licensed plus fair use combination for images from non-US contributors, since fair use is not a concept which generally exists outside the US and fair dealing is significantly more restricted. While in this case it appears not to be problematic because fair use and here, fair dealing, most likely, applies, the request for permission has these flaws:

  • Asked for "educational", "free" and "online" use, which limits some reusers, including use by a print wikipedia.
  • Didn't ask for GFDL or GFDL-compatible license, so it's not 100% certain that GFDL permission has been given.

But, in this case, those don't actually matter because of the nature of the images and their likely uses. Just traps for others to watch out for when requesting permission.

If you want to protect yourself when uploading an image as fair use, one useful technique is to get Wikipedia-only permission. Not as good as GFDL but it's enough to make sure that you and the Wikipedia won't be sued, while the fair use nature means that the restrictive license doesn't harm others. Image tags[edit]

Could someone involved with obtaining whatever permission was given please decide which image copyright tag should be used on these? There is a large project in progress to get as many images tagged as possible. Those not tagged with a compatible license will be left out of the Mandrake Linux distribution, e.g. See that project page for details.
