Where would one go to learn more about this regrettable incident of the drowning of the Strigolniki? Do we know the names or offices of the church officials who instigated the mob? Wesley 05:03, 7 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Russian Orthodox?[edit]

Actually, the Strigol'niki are considered the first Russian heretics. This means that they did not accept certain teachings or practices of the official Orthodox Church. A link would be helpful.

Several etymologies have been suggested for the word strigol'niki. One of the most persuasive is that of A. I. Alekseev, who cites Rule 21 of the Sixth Universal [Church] Council to the effect that those who are defrocked as priests and repent have the right to cut their hair as do the clergy. If they do not repent they must grow their hair as do all other laymen. Mr Alekseev's discussion of the strigol'niki can be found in his article On the Study of the Strigol'nikovs' Heresy [in Russian]. It appeared in Papers of the Participants of the Second International Conference "The Complex Approach to the study of Ancient Rus'" [in Russian].
