A "disambiguation page" made by someone who never heard of Edessa and didn't glance at "What links here." Edessa is the city of Edessa. A brief note at the head about Edessa, Greece is sufficient. Please fix this. 20:51, 24 Aug 2004 (UTC)

I dunno. Speaking as someone who has contributed a fair amount of content to the original Edessa article, I have to admit Edessa, Greece does have a measure of significance in its own right. On the other hand, I consider it condescending to call it a "small" town -- I believe it has a fair bit of history -- & if we are disambiguating the Asian Edessa (which I believe was named for the Grecian one), shouldn't we then consolidate the material under its modern name of Sanli Urfa? -- llywrch 03:48, 25 Aug 2004 (UTC)
The info at Sanli Urfa was originally at the end of the Edessa article, I moved it to a separate article over a year ago, for reasons I now forget...probably because the ancient city is more well known than Sanli Urfa, I guess. There are examples like Ashkelon, which has recently had two separate articles merged, that suggest Sanli Urfa and Edessa should be re-merged too. As to which one is more famous, I don't know, I actually saw someone on TV at an Olympic event holding a sign that said something about Edessa, if that counts for anything :) Adam Bishop 03:54, 25 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Perhaps you are the one who has never heard of Edessa, Greece. That Edessa has its own importance too, as it has its own history, social life, economy, culture etc. Saying that Edessa is a small town, is that a lucky guess or is "small" a depiction of the amount of your interest on the subject? Consider that other people may wanna know. And I also think it is a matter of time for the links to Edessa to be corrected. Etz Haim 07:17, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Now now, folks, if Rome were a disambiguation page offering choices between Rome, New York (as fine a little city as Edessa, Greece, no doubt) and Rome, Italy— would that be a genuine service to the user (that's the universal criterion in all these issues, at least at the English Wikipedia)? At the Greek Wikipedia, Edessa most surely links directly to Edessa, Greece. Perfectly sensible. BTW, there's a simple way to judge whether entries on cities should be merged or not: Are they continuous upon the same site? Ashqelon and Ashkelon fail this simple test. Well, it seems that to you the Greeks are only interested in the Greek town, while the rest of the world only needs to know about Edessa, Mesopotamia, is that so? Wrong! At least the Greeks are equally interested in both Edessas. In particular, the Mesopotamian Edessa is a subject tought at high scools in Greece, in both Religion and History (there are separate classes). So do not jump to the conclusion that everyone shares your ignorance or your unwillingness to know. Rome NY hasn't got as much to tell as Edessa, Greece. Etz Haim 08:12, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC)

This page has become a target of vandalism many times in the recent past; I begin to wonder if "page protection" would be a good measure here. Etz Haim 13:57, 1 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Yeah that's odd, I don't understand the vandalism here. But I don't think it happens often enough to warrant protection...if it was every couple of minutes, then sure, but I don't think it's severe so far. Adam Bishop 04:25, 2 Oct 2004 (UTC)
