De-merge[edit]

OK, I've done the mechanical merge (see, this is why it's better to have index articles rather than glomming multiple ships into one article), but the two sets of statistics are slightly different, and someone needs to research which is correct. Stan 16:32, 22 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Extended Defect and Maintenance Period[edit]

I think that this two paragraph:

  • During an 'Extended Defect and Maintenance Period', numerous modifications were made to the ship including the removal of her Sea Dart defences at a cost of twelve million pounds. This allowed for extra deck space that enables her to carry up to 22 aircraft, including the Harrier GR.7 and Sea Harrier FA.2.
  • At the turn of the century, Illustrious entered a refit and emerged with another large change in configuration. The ship's Sea Dart missile system was removed to allow a large flight deck and greater stowage of ordnance for RAF Harriers that were becoming a more regular part of the air wing.

Must be merged in one, the first is cited before the Bosnia war, the second after. (sorry but my english it's not sufficiently good to do it).--Moroboshi 10:33, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rolls Skipper's Chair[edit]

This is sort of cheesy, and not much of it is relevant, but Rolls has an ad campaign running about custom-building the captain's chair for HMS Illustrious article on jalopnik --Zegoma beach 13:58, 24 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of image[edit]

Deletion of images need to be accompanied by edit summary explanation or discussion on this page. An unidentified user has twice tried to delete an image on two occasions from different IP addresses. Content is by consenus so discussion could well lead to result desired, but current method is crossing line of vandalism. HJ 15:17, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Aircraft Carrier ?[edit]

When I was serving in the Royal Navy up until 1994, they weren't called aircraft carriers they were classed as through deck cruisers —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.177.116.201 (talk) 05:20, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My understanding is that the RN and the British Government referred to Illustrious and her sisters as "through-deck cruisers", because use of the term "aircraft carrier" was seen as political suicide. However, this term seems to have fallen out of favour, and most reference works I've seen refer to these ships as carriers. -- saberwyn 00:42, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Aircraft Carried[edit]

Have the Harriers carried by Illustrious now been withdrawn from service? 80.176.88.21 (talk) 20:26, 23 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The Goalkeepers are removed[edit]

But you elitist people always provide wrong information. I rather trust http://ukarmedforcescommentary.blogspot.it/.

Phd8511 (talk) 14:47, 23 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It's not wrong. As all the sources say, Illustrious, Bulwark and Albion have Goalkeeper. Illustrious will have it until her deactivation next year. Albion and Bulwark will retain it until 2015, when it will be removed. The infobox is not for flagging future changes in deployments of weapons and aircraft, but for listing what the ship has (or had). Changes in Goalkeeper's status should be on its page (where you've incorrectly put 'retired from service', which won't happen for another two years.) Benea (talk) 14:57, 23 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

New images courtesy of the MoD[edit]

Hi folks, there are plenty of photos in this article and I don't want to step on anybody's toes, so I just thought I'd point out that the MoD have released thousands of photos which are available on Commons, including several of Illustrious, which have all been place in Commons:Category:HMS Illustrious (R06) in case anybody wants to make use of any of them. Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:14, 4 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Last voyage[edit]
