Samuel Mason was a real person who operated out of Cave-in-Rock on the Ohio River just down stream from Evansville. {{}}

The story of John Murrell was grossly sensationalized by the press at the time. I'd like to suggest that anyone adding sources first reads Penick's historical biography and analysis, since he goes to great lengths to separate the hyperbole from the real story.
