Racine Concession[edit]

I changed "Since neither of the candidates received more than 50 percent of the vote and Racine refused to honor his pledge to concede to Douglas, the race was ultimately decided by the Republican-controlled State Legislature" because it appears flat wrong. The day ofter the election, Racine said: "I will urge the Legislature ... to do the right thing, respect the will of the voters and elect Jim Douglas governor of the state of Vermont on Jan. 9."

See http://www.timesargus.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050109/NEWS/501090315/1013 - the statue story seems factual. RickK 05:41, Jan 24, 2005 (UTC)

MY RESPONSE --69.162.182.158 06:08, 25 Jan 2005 (UTC):

Just because the lamp story *seems* factual does not mean that the story *is* factual. The summary of the lamp story that was added to Douglas biography is a distillation of myth surrounding the lamp story. It incorporates all the elements that sensationalize the story: the censorship of art; the prude Republican governor; the overzealous staff. While that may *seem* correct, it is not.

1) The Governor asked for the art removed for practical purposes. The office is a working space and the placement of the lamp made it highly susceptible to getting knocked over, broken, etc. The Governor did not object to the art itself.

2) The Governor did not say it made him "feel awkward"; rather his spokesman said it would be "awkward to explain" to a third grader.

3) The covering of the statue was neither during a press conference nor meant to shield the all eyes from the naked woman depicted. It was done in a non-public staff meeting as a joke -- playing off Ashcroft's infamous covering of the statue at the Dept. of Justice.

The addition of the lamp story seems hardly central -- or even secondary -- to a biography of Douglas. I see its historic interest as fleeting, and far less meaningful than the many other things Douglas has done since assuming office.

Shouldn't we aim for both factual and meaningful articles for the "free encloypedia?"

Lamp[edit]

The inclusion of the "lamp" story in the Douglas biography is frivolous and misinformed. It is not even a footnote to his term as Governor. Why not add information about his actual accomplishments or failures, instead of an inaccurate paragraph about the lamp? RickK, care to comment on this?

strange intro[edit]

The intro currently discusses the locations of various offices Vermont governors use, plus Douglas's membership in the Freemasons, both of which don't really seem like "intro-worthy" points to me. --Delirium 08:27, 13 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

biased[edit]

This entry seems like it was written by the Douglas campaign. I don't think there is a single thing to suggest that any of his policies are controversial or that he isn't the shining knight of Vermont. Efforts should by made to present a fuller picture of his terms are governor. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.91.10.121 (talk) 20:41, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Russian[edit]

It's true that Douglas majored in Russian at Middlebury. I don't think, however, there's any evidence that he speaks Russian at a high level today. The assertion that his Russian abilities enhanced the sister-state agreement between Vermont and Karelia is unsupported. The footnote cites an executive order from the Kunin administration. I think this passage should be removed. Dactylion (talk) 02:25, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've corrected this passage to show Kunin's responsibility for establishing the relationship with Karelia. Dactylion (talk) 15:07, 28 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
