I really, really object to including their movies here.  They can be listed on the respective article pages.  RickK 06:03, 21 Dec 2003 (UTC)

I strong, strongly second this motion. Are we going to squabble over whether Hitchcock gets Psycho listed beside his name or The Birds? Or do we give in to listing all of every director's movies and/or TV shows consuming massive amounts of time and cluttering the page to an unreadable level? I say just leave it out entirely. Seems like a lot less hastle for relatively little information loss (as this information is available by clicking on the link). -- Matty j 09:25, Jan 3, 2004 (UTC)

I think this list should not exist. There is already a category called film directors and categories are supposed to replace lists, for they are automatically generated. I'll add all these film directors to category film director (the ones that aren't) and maybe then we can discuss the end of this list... Paulo Oliveira 11:13, 25 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I categorized some of the film directors (up to C), but started realizing that each one usually has a country categorization. In that sense, the best thing to do would be to categorize all of them according to their country. That way, category:film directors wouldn't need to exist except for sub-categories. Some of the film directors are already listed twice (once on the film director category and once again on the film director by nationality category).—Preceding unsigned comment added by Paulo Oliveira (talkcontribs) 11:52, 25 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I think this list should be marked as "to be removed" after all the entries are correctly categorized. Up to this point I've correctly categorized everything up to G (including G). Paulo Oliveira 11:49, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I think it is important to have a list of film directors categorized alphabetically regardless of nationality and other attributes, as it makes it much easier to locate directors solely by their name.  Additionally, it is useful to have all directors listed on a single page, without having to branch out into subpages.  I esspecially think it is important that we have a list that leaves room for the names of directors that do not have pages in Wikipedia, as there are many important directors that don't.  I have been using this page as a reference for research over the past year and have found it to be very useful in navigating the world of film directors. I also think there is some confusion as to what this page should be.  It is titled as a "List of Notable Film Directors."  If we were to delete this page and leave only the film director category we would have a list of every single person designated in Wikipedia as a film director.  To be fair, some of directors who have pages are not all that notable, while there are some important directors who do not have pages on wikipedia at all.  I think it would be good to keep a list of notable directors separate from a  more comprehensive list of all directors.  I'm not saying that we need to squabble over whether or not a particular director is "notable" enough to be included on the list, it might be useful to keep a list that is separate from one that is automatically generated by Wikipedia. However I may be missing something. At the very least I think, the film director category should have one alphabetical list of all film directors regardless of nationality, and room for the addition of directors names who do not yet have pages in wikipedia. Sorry for the long and confusing post. malcom-x-mass 3:08, 12 Jun 2005 (EST)—Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.6.244.80 (talk) 07:09, 12 June 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Won't it be a lot of work? Who will decide which ones are notable? I agree with some of your ideas, but according to the Wikipedia guidelines, lists must only exist if they have a purpose other than categorization, and what we're doing here is categorizing. Maybe we could create a new "Notable directors" category, for a list is intended to be an article (initially) and only then contain a list of "stuff." Paulo Oliveira 08:50, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

daryush shokof[edit]

i would not mention the names of those who i think could in no way be included in a list of world notable film directors but strongly suggest an addition to the list of a most original director of our times; daryush shokof: www.filmregisseurs.html www.imdb.com www.shokof.com. one look at the body of works by this artist would be enough for any verification as the top of such a list.Sandysand (talk) 17:50, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

since you wrote, he has an article, and ive added him. for anyone else reading this: the best place to recommend items to include on a list is at Wikipedia:Requested articles. putting the request here reduces the number of eyeballs seeing the suggestion to a handful. Adding names to lists where there is no corresponding article is only acceptable when there are reliable sources provided showing the person is notable, and should reasonably have an article written about them based on their current notability. I would also recommend that anyone wanting to improve this article add the birth date or year of the director, and death date, as a good, neutral piece of extra information. as pointed out above, adding a major film can be problematic. also possible to add: nationality, major award, TV if only TV directing, TV/Film if both, otherwise the assumption would be film only. having some information or structure that varies from the Category helps make this more useful.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 07:22, 22 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Split[edit]

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section.

Following the recent AfD, I think this page would be far more useful if we were to split this list into two separate lists - for List of film directors and List of television directors - leaving this page to cover the intersection for directors who have worked in both media. --Rob Sinden (talk) 12:10, 6 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Requester has been asked to carry out split. I am trying to clear up the split tag back log, but I wouldn't know where to begin with this one and noone else seems interested. Op47 (talk) 16:48, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Is there consensus to do this though? As per the AfD, I am unsure of the inclusion criteria here, and would like to see further discussion before I go ahead and do it. --Rob Sinden (talk) 10:09, 6 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
On one hand, I understand your concern to get concensus. On the other hand, we cannot leave articles tagged indefinitely. May I suggest that you leave it until the end of February 2012 and if there is no further discussion, make a decision.

As far as I can tell, there are 3 possible outcomes: 1) Remove the tag and leve the article as is 2) Split the article per split tag 3) Create 2 extra lists per your wish and leaving this article for those people who want this article Op47 (talk) 23:19, 6 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'll post something at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Film in the hope of further input. --Rob Sinden (talk) 16:49, 7 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
My thanks to those who have worked on this list. Here are some things that I think you should consider.
  1. In this day and age are there many directors that only work in one field? Is it likely that a person will stay in only one?
  2. Along those same lines a given person may belong in only one of the lists today but what happens next month when a given director suddenly works in the other medium - i.e. Scorsese directs the 1st ep of Boardwalk Empire or Tarentino directs an ep of CSI. Who will monitor each of the directors status and update the lists? In other words this list is correct as is. The potential is there for one or two of the new lists to be out-of-date or wrong. Granted the examples I've used are obvious but what about less well known directors or those from non English speaking countries.
  3. The list has no sourcing as is. Now that is not a problem with those directors that have articles since you can go to their page but the red linked names need sourcing or they need to be removed.

Now these are only suggestions and I will certainly defer to the consensus of those of you who have taken care of this list for any length of time. MarnetteD | Talk 17:37, 7 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I see your point, but due to the indiscriminate nature of this list, there seems something rather redundant about it. If we have three lists: film; television; and both (being the intersection), then from your example above, Scorsese would be on all three. If we just have this one list then there is no discrimination as to what medium the director worked in, hence the irrelevancy I'm seeing. --Rob Sinden (talk) 09:25, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ack I new I left something out of my post yesterday. Is there any reason that we can't note on this list the medium(s). For example "Martin Scorsese - Film - Television". For those that are in both you could use bold letters for the one that they are most active in although that isn't entirely necessary. I think that the maintenance would be easier if everything was in one place. However if you and/or others are willing to do the upkeep on three lists then I say more power to you and proceed as you see fit. Thanks for the reply and for your work on this. The discussion has gone quiet again, Is this list going to be split or what? Op47 (talk) 19:31, 3 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Development[edit]

As it stands this list is not very helpful. The community consensus is that as per WP:CLN, we don't delete lists just because they are not currently helpful. There are some suggestions on CLN for how a list can be developed, and this may become a project for someone. There are a number of ways someone could organise this list - create a table and have fields for country of origin, dates, awards, links to filmographies, and short biographical notes. The page would become vast, of course, and some consideration could be given to splitting the list into manageable chunks - alphabetically, or regionally, or chronologically, etc. SilkTork ✔Tea time 12:29, 19 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Article rename[edit]

Since we have List of female film and television directors, I have renamed this to make clear that this is a list of male film and television directors. Someone may wish to move any female directors to the relevant list if they are not already there. Personally, I would prefer to see a single list, but I'm working with what is already here. Delicious carbuncle (talk) 22:48, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You shouldn't rename this article just because someone created another article. This is a list of all film and TV directors with WP pages, or it's supposed to be. No one has removed all the female directors, so your new title is inaccurate. I'm reverting it. - Gothicfilm (talk) 19:42, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
