Type of ice in McMurdo Sound[edit]

Factual issue: The austral summer causes the pack ice to break up. is misleading. McMurdo Sound freezes shut in winter and the ice stays in place until break-up. Map[edit]

Pity the map does not show 'McMurdo Sound'.

I agree that a continental map in addition to the map shown is called for. Someone trying to find out where McMurdo Sound is might not know where the Ross Sea is. Ealtram (talk) 17:43, 7 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Let's build this article[edit]

McMurdo Sound is one of Antarctica's most _a_ strategic bodyies of water as measured by its importance to surface vessels and aircraft re-supplying the continents largest base at McMurdo Station. In addition the sound played a key role during the heroic age of discovery for explorers such as Shackleton and Scott.

We sorely need need to build this article with photos and text:

  • high quality photos of the sound and related text regarding scientific operations
  • a good map of the sound to replace the current continental map.
  • transportation: how do people get around? helios, snow vehicles, etc.
  • status of tourism
  • sea life
  • human footprint
  • other

Good progress to date with sea life and the B-15 iceberg. Still looking for able-bodied editors to help expand this article. Any social scientists in the house? This article could benefit from the good work of good researchers willing to take on the topic of Social Conditions for those who live, work, and play on the sound's frozen ice. This includes Williams Field, fuel stations on the ice, scientific exploration, and more.

I have been pondering what's missing in the McMurdo Sound article. Scientific Research? Such a broad topic. What about life at McMurdo Station, Scott Base, and Williams Field? Yet articles already exist on these topics. Should an article about McMurdo Sound end at the shoreline or should our writing expedition explore mountain ranges and dry valleys? My gut feeling is to stick to the water and ice. Ok. What's unique about McMurdo Sound? Well, the named glaciers and glacier tongues that feed it are. The work-around solution I came up with is to insert a Prominent Features section which covers a lot of real estate in a short amount of space. I am now going to work on figuring out how to add Notes to the article. After that, I am calling it a wrap. Fishdecoy 14:58, 26 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Now it dawns on me. Climate! That's what is missing in the current article -- there's nothing about the howling winds blasting down from the polar plateau and clearing the pack ice from McMurdo Sound within a matter of hours -- the same pack ice that takes an icebreaker days if not weeks to bust through. Nor does the article portray the contrast between startling clear and seemingly perpetual sunny polar days followed by winter's deep dark. And temps: surprising warm in the summer and beyond cold in the winter. So too is there a vacancy of tall tales about the rare occurence of exploding icebergs -- something witnessed but probably lacking in any published source.

Apparently nonsensical dimensions[edit]

"The ice-clogged waters of Antarctica's McMurdo Sound extend about 55 km (35 mi) long and wide. The sound encompasses 2,500 miles (4,000 kilometers) of shoreline which opens to the Ross Sea to the north. "

This can't be right. An inlet of the sea which is about 55 km long and wide cannot have a shoreline 4000 kilometres long, even by some weird fractal measure.

Is it supposed to say, a shoreline 400 km long, which is plausible ? Or possibly, an area of 4000 square kilometres, which is also plausible ? Eregli bob (talk) 07:03, 12 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know, and no source was cited. I've removed it. The linear dimensions also seem to be open to dispute; Encyclopaedia Britannica says it is "92 miles (148 km) long and up to 46 miles (74 km) wide", for instance.[1] --Avenue (talk) 22:48, 12 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like a news article[edit]

The section titles sound like an opinion/news article:

Ice defines strategic role
Iceberg B-15A clogs McMurdo Sound
Winds have far reaching effects
Life below the ice
Seascape reveals human impact
Tourism surge yet to reach McMurdo

It also seems to flow like an opinion article: "Yet the very ships involved in supporting the export of McMurdo Station’s waste present pollution hazards themselves.
