LA rejection[edit]

The musings of whoever wrote the transportation chapter for the 2013 ASCE publication don’t seem like particularly reliable evidence for why the LA proposal was rejected. It doesn’t identify which “Standard Oil Company,” for instance, and sound like a hazy conflation with the GM streetcar conspiracy.

By contrast, all the newspaper accounts of the time make clear the problems MTA had identified with the monorail proposal and with Alweg’s financing scheme. Auto advocates are never mentioned; in fact, everyone involved seems interested in bringing a modern mass transit system to LA.

Ray Bradbury's musings half a century later seem pretty peripheral to such a brief article.

Untitled[edit]

The ALWEG Archives are hopelessly disorganized: can anybody figure out eg.

  • if the company's name was "ALWEG" or "Alweg"
  • what the name comes from
  • when Alweg Europe ceased operations
  • when Wegematic was founded and dissolved
  • when Hitachi-Alweg became just Hitachi

"The [LA] City Council rejected the proposal in favor of transit at all."

The above appears to be a typo, but I'm not certain what the intent was.--Jkiang 00:20, 5 Aug 2004 (UTC)
