There is more to the book than just the plot...

This is a story about the workings of friendship. Roz, Charis, and Tony know each other since college times (U of Toronto) in the 60s. Now, these three very different women meet regularly for lunch. Zenia, a fourth college "friend" has taken advantage of each of them, one at a time, during the past decades. Still, the memory of her haunts them, and their friendship is to a great extend based of sharing both deep contempt for her as well as admiration.

A Postmodern Novel

The story is told from the perspectives of the three women. The narrator's language adapts to the personalities of the characters.

The structure of the narrative is non-linear. This does not mean, however, that it is hard to follow the plot. In circular narration, Ms. Atwood uses enough narrative devices to make clear what time, space, and person she talks about.

A pleasure read for those who enjoy pondering what binds people together so they call each other friends – meanness, even abuse, as well as solidarity. And, on a liguistic level, listening to the three women is a pure delight.

Christine Keeler as inspiration for Zenia

There is a reference to Zenia's time in London in the book, where she causes a scandal by simultaneously sleeping with the British defence minister, and a Russian diplomat. This is a reference to Christine Keeler whose life to me seems like a source of inspiration for the character of Zenia. I wonder has Atwood said anything about this?
