Untitled[edit]

I think it is more appropriate to call him one of the greatest or limit the period when he is considered the greatest, as opposed to just stating that he is the greatest player. Here's a ranking from ITTF up to 1986 (http://www.ittf.com/museum/consolidatedrankings.pdf) and another one from 2001 on (http://www.ittf.com/ittf_ranking/world_ranking_per_name.asp?Siniors=1&Player_ID=109931), and finally this link (http://www.ittf.com/profiles/men/WALDNER/waldner.html) that showed he was most dominant in the years 1992, 1993 and 1997. Mozart of table tennis? I've also heard him called the Michael Jordan of table tennis. Both names seem kinda biased and, IMO, not really appropriate. It doesn't seem like a particularly universal nickname. Not really the same as calling Babe Ruth the "Sultan of Swat."

His 'Mozart' nick is well established, it first showed up when he won his first WC and has stuck with him since. The Jordan one is a construct and refers to his popularity in China. Hdw 17:07, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Gifs[edit]

I removed the gifs. They ruin the readability of the article, the eyes just move to the gifs while trying to concentrate on the text. /Grillo 16:39, 12 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nickname[edit]

Does anyone know what Waldner's Chinese nickname "Lao Wa" means? The article seems to imply that the nickname means "evergreen tree", but doesn't state this clearly.

Lao means old or master, for example Lao-Tzu, Master Tzu. An article I read said that Wa means friend. "evergreen tree" is another chinese nickname for Waldner (Roger Johansson)

2 "citation needed" replaced with references[edit]

A quote from the Times article (ref 3): “People in China might not know President George W. Bush,” Li Gu, Waldner’s manager in China, said. “But they know Lao Wa.” I cannot imagine any other swede more famous in China than Waldner. I am a swede myself so I should know if any other swede was famous in China. If most chinese don't even know the name of the US president they hardly know the name of the swedish prime minister, or any other swede, with the exception of Waldner. Over the last three decades I have seen many times swedish tv-programs showing Waldner in China, and it seems to be true. Whenever Waldner walks on a street in China people flock around him, asking for autographs, or just wanting to see him in real life. End of elite level career[edit]

I added this from a good reference: In May 2012 Stefan Frauenholz, Fulda-Maberzell's President, confirmed that Jan-Ove Waldner finished his contract with the club. Timo Boll: "Was yesterday's match against us the last one for Jan-Ove Waldner?" referring to the Bundesliga semifinal between Borussia Dusseldorf and Fulda-Maberzell. This probably ends his career at the international elite level, at the age of 46 years.

If you doubt that the semifinal in the German table tennis league is at international elite level take a look at the players in those teams. There are only a few Germans. Most of the players in these teams are the best players from China, Korea, Japan, etc... Germany is to table tennis players what Italy and Spain are to football players, the countries which pay the players the highest wages, so these countries attract the best players in the world. Format problems[edit]

Tried to add one more reference but that screwed up the formatting. I have no idea why.

It is the last reference which causes the problem. Well, it doesn't matter much, but the Fulda-Maberzell web site, retrieved 19 July, 2012 shows J.O Waldner as one of the four top class players in the club on a picture. Problem fixed. It screwed up this talk page too, so that everything after the last reference disappeared, in read mode. Youtube interview[edit]

There is a very good interview with Jan-Ove Waldner at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsspSxb8FOg

It is made by a Chinese TV company and shows his career. He is called Lao-Wa by the Chinese reporter and by all the Chinese commentators all through this 10 min interview mixed with video clips from his career.
