Name of this article[edit]

Shouldn't the name of this article be just Rhythm Nation 1814? Allmusic and Rolling Stone list it as such. I am inclined to agree with them; I don't think "Janet Jackson's" is part of the title, merely an indication of the name of the artist. indopug (talk) 17:22, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No. Several sources at the time of release indicated the full title of the album is Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814, including Rolling Stone if you read the review you mentioned.

Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation (a title that puts ego before social conscience) begins with the distant sound of a tolling bell – a muffled memory of a dream deferred, perhaps (let freedom ring), or the still-faint promise of better things to come (ringing in the new).

A simple google seach also reveal several sources which list the albums full title, including From Brass to Gold - the encyclopedia for the history of A&M records. Other sources, at the time of release and currently shorten the title to Rhythm Nation 1814 for the sake of brevity, but its not an indication of the albums true title. - No indication has ever been given. I've read online biographies as well as old news reports found through my college online data base. I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

An important turning point for black women[edit]

The claim in the article that "The commercial success of Jackson's album became part of an important turning point for black women in the recording industry" is based on a general statement in one source that Janet Jackson along with Tina Turner and Whitney Houston were achieving financial success. The source does not cite the album, and does not appear to credit either Jackson or the album for being part of an important turning point. That claim needs more secure sourcing. I would suggest deleting "The commercial success of Jackson's album became part of an important turning point for black women in the recording industry", and moving the quote from the Encyclopedia of Women to the Jackson article where it would fit better. Interludes on vinyl[edit]

It's stated in the article that the interludes before most of the songs were removed in the vinyl version. I don't believe that is true. I own a copy of the US vinyl release and ALL of the interludes are there. They are simply not listed on the labels or backside of the album, but they are indeed there. Is there some sort of vinyl release that omits them?

Edits to be made to article[edit]

Why does this article continue so many negative references - who cares what the negative critics said. It has turned out to be one of the most critically and commercially successful albums of all time.

How many millions sold? Let's look at the math[edit]

Recently, we had a discussion at Talk:Janet_Jackson#How many millions sold? Revisiting the math at which we arrived at the conclusion that Janet's sales figures have been artificially inflated by huge amounts. She has not sold so many millions around the world; her core audience is in the United States, which has good record-keeping authority for sales. The RIAA says this album is certified for 6 million units in the US, and all the other certifications around the world do not add up to another million. So we know the album sold perhaps 7 million certified units, and the usual industry inflation is as much as half again, so the figure we are telling the reader should be about 10.5 million, give or take. The media sometimes uses the wildly inflated numbers coming out of Janet's management people, and because of that, the number 12 million is often quoted.[1] But this nonsense cannot continue rising upward indefinitely. The place where we draw the line on ridiculous ego-serving inflation is at 12 million, not the wishful 20 million placed recently in the article. Note that the article achieved GA status in July 2008 at which point it said "8 million" in sales.[2] Two years later when it failed to make FA status, the article was trying to push a sales figure of 14 million, citing Janet's own public relations hype published in prnewswire.[3] We should never be citing numbers from Janet's people. I also agree. This is an album that sold less than 1 million (in certifications) outside USA. Early this day I found a kinda of WP:SYNTH with her USA-sales based on certifications+nielsen report+BMG club. I've never saw in other contemporary albums a method like that tbh. I mean a breakdown only in post-Nielsen releases not before. Its only appropiate to have mention it in the commercial performance but not as the "total sales"; hopefully was fixed by Binksternet. --Apoxyomenus (talk) 03:38, 29 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Some of legit 20 million sellers are Whitney, Daydream, and Oops!... I Did It Again, and all of them have diamond status in the US and multi-platinum in many other countries.
