Maybe I'm being thick, but what was the point of moving Abiotic Petroleum to Abiotic Petroleum origin and replacing it with a redirect to what it already was? The Land 22:45, 3 Jun 2004 (UTC)

I'm not sure I understand... content is in Abiotic petroleum origin, and Abiotic petroleum is a redirect. Isn't that how it's supposed to be? It's on a 65 second delay right now, which will make the job take well over 5 hours. If we want to shorten it, I can always cut the delay back. It's just a matter of not pissing people off with server-overloading. I don't see any need to do some by hand. --Yath 07:22, 14 Aug 2004 (UTC)

bi-, tri-nomial[edit]

Hm it is certainly rare, I can say that. The dog and cat being classified as subspecies of their wild ancestor seems to be a recent development and I think it is still permeating the textbooks so I am sure there are some old ones left that still say canis familiaris and felis domesticus. Species in Taxoboxes[edit]

Yath, I agree, it was redundant to put (as I did) "C. esculenta" under species in the taxobox on the Taro article. But I was trying to make a point. The species name of the taro plant is NOT "esculenta." A species name is a bionomial, so Colocasia esculenta or C. esculenta is the correct entry. I would suggest removing the "species" line from all the taxoboxes and simply go to the next "box" which is the binomial and there list Colocasia esculenta. It only shows a lack of understanding of taxonomic names at that level to list esculenta as the "species". - Marshman 17:14, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I figured that was why you did it. I don't know much about biology and taxonomy; my interest in the Tree of Life project is purely technical. So, I can't make the determination that it would be "redundant"; rather, I'm just blindly following the current conventions. Your modification was a stark departure from the format used so far. I expect that some discussion on WT:TOL would be a good idea (and if you read the whole page, you'll see that I scrupulously avoid the sections pertaining to why things are done the way they are, as opposed to how). It would be easy enough to modify Template:Taxobox_species_entry to be blank or different or something, if you can get folks to agree on something. --Yath 20:57, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Those blasted dashes . . .[edit]

Hi Yath - wonder if I could ask you not to use dashes: they're very annoying things, the main problem with them is that they're very brittle, and when editing near them, they fragment into little pieces some of which get left behind, stuck to other text like porcupine quills and showing up (usually as semi-colons) unwanted in the text. I can't see anywhere where they are really needed and that an ordinary hyphen or comma doesn't do the job perfectly well.
Also curious to know why you're removing line spaces after taxoboxes (where they're very useful for seeing easily where the taxobox stuff ends), but inserting them after every header, where they're completely unnecessary - MPF 08:22, 5 Oct 2004 (UTC)

I have been unsure about the dashes, and I agree it would be good to just use hyphens. But a blank line after a taxobox will cause the article text to be shifted downward. And a blank line after a header makes the source easier to read. For me. --Yath 11:52, 5 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Apologies for adding back the "popular programming languages" category to the Ruby page in my recent edit -- the last edit to the page removed it without comment, and I was checking that the removal was legit (which it obviously is) when I saw some room for improvement in the page itself. Proper name caps[edit]

Yath, I noticed you are a source of changes to certain words used in biology to designate taxa from upper to lower case. In biology/taxonomy, the taxon level (or designation) is considered part of the name and is therefore a proper noun requiring caps. If the taxon name is used by itself, it is in lower case. Thus, it would be correct to write either "The family of figs is the Moraceae" or "Figs are in the Family Moraceae" It is incorrect to write: "order Pinales" (s/b "Order Pinales") and incorrect to write: "Poecilia is a Genus of minnows" (s/b "Poecilia is a genus of minnows"). Article Licensing[edit]

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

The floppy you have probably holds 1474560 bytes, which you can verify with the DOS dir command. That's the same as 1440 KB, which, if expressed as megabytes, is either 1.47 or 1.41, depending on what you like to call a megabyte. --Yath 03:28, 19 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
This may be, but the industry standard for referring to a high-density 1440KB 3-1/2 inch floppy disk is 1.44MB. In fact, this is what is normally imprinted right on the disk. I'm not sure what you mean. I am looking at a box of high density floppy disks right now, all of which say "1.44MB" on them. I realize that there were strong feelings on both sides with respect to the outcome of the AfD for this article, now located at Alternative theories regarding Hurricane Katrina. I would like to assure those who expressed concerns about the content, tone, and potential for degradation of this article that I intend for it to continue to exist only as long as is necessary to draw the contributions of fringe theorists away from the more substantial Hurricane Katrina articles. Once interest in this topic dies down, I'll quietly trim and merge this information into the appropriate general-topic articles. In the interim, I will carefully watch this page to prevent it from being abused, and I will continue to work towards making this article NPOV, properly sourced, and useful to those seeking an accurate record of the hysterics that so often follows catastrophe. Thanks for making this clear elsewhere in your page (or not, as the case may be). Traditionally new threads go on top in Wikipedia; I simply followed this convention.

Why don't you comment on the issue at hand, rather than the organization of your talk page (the pessimist in me says this is because you don't want new objections to be as readily viewable as the more positive content of your own creation at the top of your page)? I note you have continued the edit war rather than simply explaining your reasoning in a logical manner, which, despite your aggressive, rude, and childish nature to date, might entice me to back your position. I feel strongly that the spelling of the word "licen[cs]e" is a very insignificant part of the article and that our time could be spent in much more productive ways, such as improving the article. The only "side" I'm on is the one against the edit war, which you have perpetuated since removing my remark from the talk page without even so much as leaving a comment (though I don't believe you've touched the article since responding here, to your credit).

I assume you believe that I'm on your "side" from the fact that I reverted the article back to your last edit at one point. My only reason for doing this was that they had removed substantial numbers of links (in addition to changing the spellings), which I deemed unacceptable. More to the point, I haven't seen a dictionary that doesn't list "license" and "licence" as valid instances of the same word. Thanks, but I like to follow a 1 revert per day rule. Going the limit against those guys cannot possibly improve the situation. I'm afraid I don't know of a solution right now, except long-term persistence. This is one of the warts that Wikipedia is destined to wear for a while I think. We seem to have a case of a person or persons intent on changing the article from commonwealth to american english, in violation of policy. Given the wrath that Wikipedians often exhibit when they feel that their culture is being marginalized (see Talk:Color), it's not a good idea to let that happen. If there's a good reason to change it, I'm sure someone will mention it on Talk:GIF. Yes, in the absence of a compelling reason for one or the other, the rule is to stay with whatever variety the article was originally written in. I'm not saying a case couldn't be made for it being US-centric enought to switch, but the issue is way too sensitive for the article to be changed without some sort of discussion.
As for whether it's better to be an observer--it depends on the thickness of one's skin, I suppose. Many strong-willed wikipedians have abandoned the effort due to frustration, and I've come close several times. Reversion to color[edit]

Hi there. Do you have any reference to support that "color" is not US-only? If so, could you please fix the spelling MoS that the article references? Because that's what it's saying at the moment, so the previous editor was correct in that it looked like a contradiction. Thanks.

It was pretty good before with the footnote. Note that being truthful is not inconsistent with being POV. Specifically, that phrasing reinforces the perception that the US stands apart from the rest of the world in some significant way--while the subject is in fact merely a spelling difference. It was taken approximately here, in a park in Cathey's Valley in Mariposa County, California. As you can see I'm new at this. Thanks! - the location rules out Coast Live Oak (it doesn't get onto the east side of the Central Valley at all). On leaf shape, it is actually Quercus wislizenii (Interior live oak), if you want to add the pic there too (it doesn't have one yet!). Good idea to carry a 10 or 15 cm ruler around, but it won't always be easy to hold next to the photo subject. With pics done on a scanner it is a lot easier (see e.g. here), but then you don't get the natural background or the depth of focus. Not an easy one to solve! - MPF 01:56, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I reported Cogito Ergo Sumo because I suspected he was the anonimous IP user that kept reverting the article North America in the past weeks. I suspected because they both support the same POV, they both are from Toronto Canada, and because of the same style of writing. Well, I was not wrong.
