John Denver image

Bbsrock, I noticed that you uploaded a new image for John Denver. However, you didn't inlcude a source or any copyright information on the image. If you just lifted the image off the Internet somewhere, we can't use it. Images must be covered by fair use (such as a still from a movie), released under the GFDL or be in the public domain. Most images of celebrities aren't covered under these conditions. Please update the page where the image resides (here) with the appropriate copyright information. En-dashes

I see that you've been quite busy changing many properly formatted en-dashes into hyphens. Might I ask why? It's a violation of policy, and I'll revert them for you if you don't mind.

Dates

I'm afraid that I overrode your edit in an edit conflict -- but when I checked, I found that you'd only added a comma in the middle of a date. There isn't any point doing that, as the Wikipedia date engine shows the date with or without a comma depending on the User's preferences; I never see a comma, because in England we don't use one, but U.S. users always see commas (if they have their preferences set properly). --Phronima 21:49, 10 August 2005 (UTC)

Hi, Bbsrock. I noticed your edit on Lincoln Chafee and just wanted to let you know that there's no need to rearrange dates in that way, even if it's an American subject. Hi, I've noticed that some of the images you have uploaded to Wikipedia have no source or copyright information. Under the Criteria for speedy deletion, if they are like this for more than seven days after being tagged as lacking source information then they can be deleted. I realize that you are well-intentioned on this, but (for example) [[4 October]] is correct Commonwealth English markup; there is no particular reason to change Commonwealth English to U.S. English in an article on Latin America. Dashes & Dates

Hello,

I'm new here, and I'm still learning. Most of my contributions to Wikipedia thus far have been birth & death dates. I'm unsure of the correct dash to use to separate the two. I read somewhere in the editing instructions to use the em dash not the en dash. I noticed on your Page you seem to prefer the en dash. Which is correct? Michael David 15:33, 26 January 2006 (UTC)

Coretta Scott King birthdate/birthname

I noticed you changed my "(born Coretta Scott; {dates}." It seems to be common and logical to list birthname with birthdate: see, for example, Kathie Lee Gifford and Maya Angelou.

hyphens/dashes in dates -- what's the difference? (can't see it)

Hi there. On your user page you contrast and compare these two lines:

([[October 23]], [[1923]] - [[December 1]], [[2005]])
([[October 23]], [[1923]] – [[December 1]], [[2005]])

But they look identical to me. The upper one is supposedly one you hate and the lower one is the one you favor. Please clue me in on the difference. I noticed your (minor) edit of Kevin Payne which according to page history entailed exchanging the hyphen/dash separating the birth/death dates; could not see the difference in my browser, and followed you to your user page. The Beatles pictures

Hey mate, we're trying to write an article there and not build a gallery :-) The thing is, the pictures were laid out in a neat order - John then Paul then George then Ringo, which you've upset rather :-) Do you think you could choose the one or two best pictures from your batch, and move them after the JPG & R individual pictures, and remove the rest? The pictures you remove can maybe go onto the talk page so other people can see what spare photos we have available. I appreciate you're adding some colour, but the pictures of the 4 guys in order is really too great a concept to meddle with don't you think? :) --kingboyk 00:12, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

George Harrison image

Can you please tell me exactly why you prefer that ugly George Harrison image over the better one? Perhaps the better one is copyrighted (like is said in the image itself), but it is fair use and it is low-resolution for non-profit purposes. There are tons of copyrighted fair-use images on Wikipedia, just like the George Harrison image I propose that we use.

I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Free images

Regarding your email about freely licensed images ...

For anyone who is/was in the US congress, there is an official portrait that, as a work of the US federal government, is public domain. The official photo of John Edwards is already up there. You can also look at his old senate webpage using http://web.archive.org - most members of congress have photo galleries on their webpages and they are all public domain.

One cheesy trick is to use google image search with site:.gov. So, for example, if I wanted to try and find former Virginia governor Jim Gilmore, I could go to [2]. (Keep in mind that you will get some false positives this way - you need to make sure that a prospective image is really from the US federal government and not a state government website.)

As far as contacting the campaign directly, if they don't reply, there isn't but so much to do other than to try contacting a different person. (For example, you may have just used a generic "contact us" link, but you might want to look around for an email address/phone number for a media liason or something.) Also, it's important to make sure that your email clearly identifies who we are and what our licensing requirements are and that it is not just "can you send me a photo". Using language like "to help us improve coverage of your candidate" is a good idea because whoever you are contacting will share that goal. Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission has some decent sample letters of permission if you haven't already seen them.

There is a problem I have with the photo. For it to be used, the author must relicense that photo with a GNU or Creative Commons license (it must be noted that Flickr does the CC licensing). Yes, GFDL images are welcome, as well as all Creative Commons images that are not non-commercial or no-derivates (so {{cc-by-sa-2.5}} is welcome, {{cc-by-nc-nd-2.0}}) is not. If it's your own work, GFDL has the disadvantage that the license has been written for software and text and not for images.
