Image maps on wikipedia

Just curious, does Wikipedia support usage of image maps, ie. if I used an image on Wikipedia and divided it into HTML sections like described? -- Natalinasmpf 02:12, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Yes wikipedia now has http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:ImageMap installed, and there is an example of its use on the page here -- Harry Wood (talk) 15:43, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

I guess Jeffz1 thought my Online Image Map Tool was not useful for this article. I guess I feel different about this. I know about the advertising rule 4.1, but I think this Image mapping tool is great for the users who land on this page. Please if you truly think this link is not good for the users on this article then I guess it should stay off but I feel it is a great tool. Also the user comments are real and all positive. I don't know what could be better than this free online image map tool that mgwalk had posted. I happened to land on his page from this image map article. I didn't bookmark the site and I knew I had gotten to it via this wiki article. So I came back to find it again. To my suprise it was gone and I couldn't remeber the domain. Personally, I don't think any website that's soley an image map creator adds anything to the article. It seems like it's a decent tool but that's all it is and wikipedia isn't here to promote your work, nor is it here to use in place of your favourites folder. To be completely honest parts of the article can sound very much like an instruction manual or a "how to" and should probably be edited at least in style if not content.57.66.65.3 (talk) 13:54, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

I agree that the article needs a bit more work, but a section for image-map tools is definitely of value to the article. Image-maps are very difficult to create by hand. I'll add a few in, including the site mentioned above because I think it's probably the only online tool. — SimonEast (talk) 05:18, 3 October 2009 (UTC)

Printable illustration

The live image map example appearing here is a good illustration if you're viewing the article in a web browser BUT wikipedia should be printable. Need to think of a way of showing the idea in a diagram with arrows, perhaps to appear alongside the live example. -- Harry Wood (talk) 15:45, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

I'd like to see in the article, the date and revision number of HTML that the image maps first came in to existence. I swear I remember these from as early as 1995 Netscape Navigator. Origin of imagemap

I believe the history of 'imagemap' recorded in wikipedia is incorrect. I am the original creator and my understanding is that, because of this, I cannot edit the page but here is some information for anyone who wishes to update the information.

If you look at the URL http://1997.webhistory.org/historyday/abstracts.html it says:

In May 1993, when Kevin Hughes set up a Web site at Honolulu Community College

Kevin may well have worked on his campus map earlier but I would wonder upon which server and using which browser he did this. Mine are both documented here.

Image Decoding

Some tools to support image decoding when browsers are able to send the x, y coordinates of the mouse click when you select the image. If you have xmosaic and would like an advance demo of this check out http://www.bsdi.com/demo/hypermedia.html. The patches required for xmosaic 1.0 are pointed to by that file. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, don't use them for production code. Only use them for this demo. I'm hoping I can get support for this in xmosaic 1.1 (to do it right requires changing <IMG SRC...> to support something like <IMG ISMAP SRC...> to enable the new code only on images that support it.

Obsolescent?

You virtually never see image maps on the Web any more; this has been the case for many years. If they are obsolescent for some reason (whether by official deprecation, or the fact that people prefer to use Flash applets or what not) then this should probably be made clear.
