Hi Evan - I see you have Point Reyes national seashore on your ToDo list. I've just put up a rather stubby article about it - can you improve it? The wretched National Park Service site has crashed so I can't get official info at the moment, which hasn't helped. seglea 07:51, 30 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Re: Categorization Suggestion[edit]

Hi, in response to your dismissive note, I suppose you did not see the re-direct to the dedicated page. My fault, I forgot to update the links on the Categorization pages in wiki and meta. I fixed that. The page is User:Brent Gulanowski/Categorization. If you did read it, then I don't understand your questions at all, since I was very specific and even provide an algorithm which is meant to show that the system could evolve naturally and need not be stuctured top-down like tree-based systems. Brent Gulanowski 21:37, 17 Dec 2003 (UTC)

I put some specific questions on User talk:Brent Gulanowski/Categorization. I think my main question is: how is your proposal different from other categorization proposals? Have you read other categorization proposals? --ESP 21:51, 17 Dec 2003 (UTC)
I will look there. Your question "how is it different?" is meaningless. Any reader of two proposals should be able to understand the difference themselves. I wrote one because I have not found one which was logically coherent or based on any kind of conceptual theory. Brent Gulanowski 06:02, 18 Dec 2003 (UTC)
OK, so, I don't particularly feel compelled to take your proposal seriously, then. --ESP 17:31, 18 Dec 2003 (UTC)
This is a very strange conversation. Did it occur to you that I have no idea who you are or what your responsibilities are? I don't recall imposing anything on you in the first place, thus your defensive posture is very confusing. The simplest thing you could have done was to say, "Here are some other proposals under discussion. Read them and then revise yours so that it adds something. BTW, I'm Evan and I care because ..." However, you began by making accusations. How about an encouraging response to a new wikipedian instead of an alienating one?
I have added a very large, detailed addendum to the proposal, on the talk page. If if fact you have some kind of stake in this, if you will be so kind as to provide links to other information and suggestions or anything whatsoever, I will read them and rewrite my proposal taking them into consideration. Brent Gulanowski 19:51, 18 Dec 2003 (UTC)
I'm one of the MediaWiki developers. I'm working on meta:field-value pairs, and one of the implementations of this is meta:categorization using field-value pairs. My interest in this is that you added your proposal to the list of proposals on meta:categorization, but it not only wasn't parallel with the other proposals -- since it didn't emphasize implementation -- but I also didn't see much in it that wasn't encompassed in all the other proposals around.
If you're serious about seeing categorization implemented in MediaWiki, you may want to extract the valuable pieces of your personal proposal and combine them into the meta:categorization requirements. --ESP 19:59, 18 Dec 2003 (UTC)
I added ten or so more. I hope they are helpful. I might be able to come up with more or refactor these if requested. Brent Gulanowski 04:20, 19 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Warbox[edit]

So sorry! I didn't know about the first time. I just figured since they'd been added to the other u.s.-related wars I would normalize and update. Our--and by our I guess I mean me ;)--standing policy is "This is an attempt to translate the battlebox format to a warbox format for U.S.-related wars. Do not force this box on pages where the users reject it. It is encouraged, but totally optional, and will often not work perfectly with a specific conflict--WWII, for example, would be difficult to fit into this paradigm." Anyway, my bad. I just thought the first guy who did it had missed a couple. jengod 18:22, Mar 16, 2004 (UTC)

P.S. I added a note to Talk:Military history of the United States specifically saying not to add to the Barbary Wars pages. If anyone else comes by, just remove and then send 'em over there. jengod 18:28, Mar 16, 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing[edit]

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

UDHR[edit]

Hi EvanProdromou. I've just reverted-out the changes you made to the UDHR article back on Sept 15th. The GBR 'most translated' statement is (unfortunately) a complex issue with many people advocating different wordings and reasons for keeping/removing the statement, in various forms -- please see the Talk page discussion on this issue. I wish we could find a way of wording this which would satisfy everyone; maybe I'll write the Guinness people directly and ask them. :( Cheers, Madmagic 05:00, 19 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've done it several times and not had a good response. I've altered your revert; please see the Talk page for the UDHR, where this kind of discussion should probably take place. --ESP 14:54, 19 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

We should probably, then, amend Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/nominate. I'll give it a poke after I finish my nomination. --ESP 19:53, 6 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, you were quite right about the form. Strictly speaking, a candidate need not answer the questions - but it is highly unlikely that anyone could be promoted without having done so. BD2412 T 20:03, 6 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations![edit]

Congratulations! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. You might find the new administrators' how-to guide helpful. Cheers! --

Thanks! I'm looking forward to helping out with this task! --ESP 16:13, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

RE: UN French à la UN English[edit]

Hi Evan! Glad to see you're in Montreal, too!

Actually, I'm even happier that you brought up the UN/Académie française query. It is extremely pertinent and deserves investigation. When I was studying translation at NYU, we had the discussion about English at the UN (since there were two UN translators/interpreters as teachers in the program). It involved regional differences, unnatural English for any English-speaking country and British Imperialism.

I can't see the same type of debate for U.N. French. First, the norms in most French speaking countries are pretty much identical, aside from regional terms and major feminization in Québec. However, all French-language media outside of Paris try to align themselves with Paris media norms to a large extent, hence the term "français international". Upshot: there isn't much of an issue. So, in terms of a standard, the issue is more feminization, which has even caused scandals in France.

Then, the real question is, as you wrote, WHAT/WHO does the UN use for French? All I can say is that they don't really think about it and have certainly not adopted the Académie's spelling reforms from the past 100 years. Aside from that, I don't see any urge/need to use the A.F. as a reference. Dictionaries take up that role already. CJ Withers 20:10, 5 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Barbary States[edit]

Did you even read the definition of Kleptocracy? That is not what it means. There is no reason to refer to them as Kleptocracies even if they robbed every country on the planet so long as their internal structure was adverse to internal corruption. Firstly, use words you know the meaning of. Secondly, did you even look at the talk page to discuss your edit? For God's sake I did not just run amok all over the article without forethought, and there is no reason for you to revert without the same kind of forethought. I did not mark my edit as minor, and you shouldn't have either. Angrynight 17:03, 24 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Evan,[edit]

I saw your name in my watchlist (Democide). I bet you've been told before that your name sounds terribly Greek! It's the genitive case of Pródromos-Πρόδρομος (genitive ends in -ou, so Prodrómou-Προδρόμου is for <<Prodromos'>>), meaning literally "forerunner's".[1] So that would aim to make you "the son of the forerunner". Prodromos is a familiar appellation for John the Baptist in the Greek Orthodox Church (Ágios Ioánnis o Pródromos - also John the Forerunner in English). See also Family name#Greece. Hi. teh first war has the infobox added in it and I decided to add one in for the second. The reason being is because I believe that all wars should have one out of principle but above all to give a summarized verison of the events of the war - who, when, what, why and the result.

I hope you agree

Wikimedia Canada[edit]

If I join, it will be primarily to help in getting speakers of Amerindian languages to organize and also to promote the setting up of Wikipedia groups throughout Quebec, especially outside Montreal, around universities. If I get involved, it will lead to the creation of a sub-committee called Wikimédia Québec that will operate in French. Otherwise, monolingual French speakers will as usual be excluded from participating fully, leaving only unrepresentative people like me (one foot in French, the other in English all year long) to speak in their name. That sub-committee could send bilingual delegates to the Canadian-wide reunions when needed. Of course it will look silly at first since there will be very few people in the whole committee, probably located in Montreal (or Toronto?), but as groups are organized in at least Montreal, Laurentides, Abitibi, Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Saguenay, Sherbrooke and Gaspesie, then it will start to make perfect sense. In the end, it will be a lot less complicated and efficient than always trying to appear to work in two languages all the time. Decades of experience shows that French always ends up being just a language of translation in most cases, even when the people with the best intentions in the world try to make it otherwise. I don't mind my language being just a translation language in Toronto or Calgary, but not in Montreal. But you knew that already, didn't you? ;-) -- Mathieugp (talk) 18:58, 1 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being minor in the usual way.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. With the script in place, you can continue with this functionality indefinitely (its use is governed by WP:MINOR). If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 19:08, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

MSU Interview[edit]

Dear EvanProdromou,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

 • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
 • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
 • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
 • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
 • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chlopeck (talkcontribs) 23:19, 14 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Help lines[edit]

Hi, DocJames. In the wake of Wikipedian Aaron Swartz's suicide on Friday -- featured inremembering Aaron Swartz -- I've been wondering what we can do to help prevent similar tragedies in the future, in our community and in the world at large.

Noting that Google, Yahoo, and Ask have special links to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline when they get queries for "suicide", I thought it would make sense to add a simple but prominent link to suicide.

There are archives of conversations on the subject on Talk:Suicide, and specifically I've seen you say that "we don't link to hotlines". I wasn't able to find a clear summary of why that is, though. It feels like suicide might be a special case, and since we have list of suicide crisis lines it could even be a wiki link. --ESP (talk) 19:29, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

We do not link to suicide hotlines at the top of the article as I have been unable to find any decent evidence to support there use. Am more than happy to look at evidence other present. We state in the prevention section "Although crisis hotlines are common there is little evidence to support or refute their effectiveness" with a couple of references. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) (if I write on your page reply on mine) 19:34, 13 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Evan. I agree that the lose of a Wikipedian is a terrible thing. I have spent a few weeks bringing suicide to good article status in his honor. With some help from people who can spell / use grammar we could look at trying to bring it to FA. The article Kevin Fox (designer) has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, this newly created biography of a living person will be deleted unless it has at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the prod blp tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within seven days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. Extended confirmed protection[edit]

Hello, EvanProdromou. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

 • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
 • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:47, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins[edit]

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers[edit]

Hi EvanProdromou.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Kevin Fox (designer)[edit]

The article Kevin Fox (designer) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Notability

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. David J. Adelman[edit]

Hi Evan. On Talk:David J. Adelman you asked the question,

"So, I heard from a friend from Philadelphia that the Wikipedia page for the chairman of the Holocaust Memorial in that city had been deleted. Looking over Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/David J. Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)[edit]

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

To find out when the change has gone live or if you have any questions please visit the Administrator's Noticeboard. 20:05, 7 December 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

New administrator activity requirement[edit]

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

 1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
 2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add NoACEMM to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:24, 29 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Administrative permissions and inactivity reminder[edit]

Information iconThis is a reminder that established policy provides for removal of the administrative permissions of users who have made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period. You are receiving this annual reminder since you have averaged less than 50 edits per year over the last 5 years.

Inactive administrators are encouraged to reengage with the project in earnest rather than to make token edits to avoid loss of administrative permissions. Resources and support for reengaging with the project are available at Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/administrators. If you do not intend to be engaged with the project in the foreseeable future, please consider voluntarily resigning your administrative permissions by making a request at the bureaucrats' noticeboard.

Thank you for your past contributions to the project. — JJMC89 bot 00:17, 1 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Epistle of James to Quadratus moved to draftspace[edit]

An article you recently created, Epistle of James to Quadratus, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more in-depth coverage about the subject itself, with citations from reliable, independent sources in order to show it meets WP:GNG. It should have at least three. And please remember that interviews, as primary sources, do not count towards GNG.(?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page.Onel5969 TT me 10:31, 27 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Chilando Chitangala moved to draftspace[edit]

Thanks for your contributions to Chilando Chitangala. Unfortunately, it is not ready for publishing because it has no sources and no categories and almost no content. Your article is now a draft where you can improve it undisturbed for a while.

Please see more information at Help:Unreviewed new page. When the article is ready for publication, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. BoyTheKingCanDance (talk) 16:57, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, EvanProdromou. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or draft page you started, "Epistle of James to Quadratus".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the db-afc, db-draft, or db-g13 code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.
