Area Comparison[edit]

I edited the part "Area - comparative: slightly smaller than the US state of Montana" to "Area - comparative: slightly smaller than Germany", as more people will know what size Germany is than what size some Montana is (I personally only know that it's a US state and that's about it. Change it back if you want to but IMO it describes the size better.--HJV 23:42, 27 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Size of Lake Saimaa[edit]

4400 km² refers to the Iso-Saimaa (Greater Saimaa), which includes the proper Saimaa, Pihlajavesi, Haukivesi, Puruvesi, Orivesi and Pyhäselkä along with some smaller lakes.--JyriL ^talk 18:58, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Help request with landform names[edit]

Are there any names that describe lowlands in Finland?

I am looking to identify the Scandinavian Isthmus area, since it looks like this term is not in use, although I saw the phrases like "its isthmus" in reference to Scandinavian Peninsula. There is Karelian Isthmus, though. Any other names?

I'm a bit confused, what do you mean exactly? Atleast none geopraphical places are called isthmuses (kannas) here, and I can't really figure which part would form one. If it means the part where Finland borders with Sweden and Norway, I can't recall any names. For the "lowlands", those only exist on the coast of Ostrobothnia, and are just called "Pohjanmaan lakeus" or something, flat lands like this picture well illustrates: [1] --Pudeo (Talk) 22:19, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I mean that usually every distinct piece of the Earth surface has some name: North European Plain, San Francisco Bay Area, Sahara Desert, Siberia, etc. I don't know how to call the pieces of Earth where Scandinavian Peninsula meets the continent (usually such places are called "isthmus", but the term "Scandinavian Isthmus" is not used). Like I said, my goal is to describe the East European Plain. I would like to write the text, something like,

"it is bounded by Ural Mountains in the East. In the North is is bounded by the White Sea, what is in between? , and the Baltic Sea".

P.S. I've just found in German wikipedia the article de:Finnische Seenplatte (very nice photo inside). Does English wikipedia has the corresponding artiucle? In particluar, Geography of Finland writes "the interior lake district is the largest geographic region". "Lake district" would match the German term "de:seenplatte. Would the term Finnish Lakeland or Finnish lake district (Finnish Lake District) be correct? The term European plain is not familiar to me, so hopefully someone else can reply this. The Lake District is called Järvi-Suomi in Finnish, which would be just "Lake Finland" in English. Climate[edit]

Presenting extreme temperatures isn't a good way of describing the climate. A good way would be tofind out the average temperatures for 10 to 15 different places and present the average temps. Month by month and annual at each place. The same appies to precipitation. The climate is usually desribed by static 30 year peroids or longer. By "static" I mean that a certain 30 year period must not be changed on an annual basis. Not changing 1961-1990 into 1962-1991,1963-1992 - or the last 30 years, and so on. Pre decided periods only. Environmental concerns[edit]
